LONDON (REUTERS).- Move over George Clooney. Lady Gaga? So yesterday. The new celebrity in town is Renaissance artist Leonardo Da Vinci, subject of a major exhibition at London's National Gallery that has generated the hype of a Hollywood blockbuster. Critics have fallen over themselves to find superlatives to describe "Leonardo Da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan," which gathers nine of only 15 or 16 paintings of the master's paintings known to exist. Missing are arguably the most famous of all -- the "Mona Lisa" at the Louvre in Paris and "The Last Supper" mural in Milan which cannot be moved anyway. But the National Gallery is still confident that the collection, including loans from around the world, represents "the most complete display of Leonardo's rare surviving paintings ever held." Curator Luke Syson, who worked for five years on the exhibition, was close to tears describing ... More

First loan exhibition of Chinnery's work in Britain for over 50 years on view at Asia House in London   Pangolin London presents figurative sculptures by British artist Anthony Abrahams   LACMA'S Inaugural Art + film Gala honors Clint Eastwood and John Baldessari and raises $3 million

George Chinnery, Portrait of the hong merchant Mowqua. Oil on canvas, 62.2 x 45.8 cm. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited.

LONDON.- George Chinnery is one of the most neglected British artists in his native country. Whilst there have been substantial exhibitions of his work in Lisbon (1995), Tokyo (1996), Hong Kong (2005) and recently in Macau (2010), there has been no public exhibition in Britain since the Arts Council show in 1957, and prior to that a retrospective at the Tate in 1932. Therefore the exhibition on view at Asia House in London from 4 November 2011 to 21 January 2012 is long overdue and promises to surprise and delight the visitor. The exhibition is generously sponsored by HSBC. Among British artists Chinnery is a most unusual case. He spent the last fifty years of his life in India and on the China coast, where he died and lies buried, and almost all his best work was done in the East. Other 'orientalist' artists from Europe might dip a toe (sometimes more) into Asia, and ... More

Encompassing a selection of works from the past two decades, this exhibition is testament to Abrahams’ unique artistic talent. Born in London in 1926 Abrahams first attended the University of Cambridge, where he read English, and went on to study painting at the Anglo-French Art Centre in London. Following this he made a successful career in the world of advertising before he turned to his artistic practice full time in 1991. Known for his stylistically distinctive figurative sculptures, Anthony Abrahams’ work fuses formal excellence with an emotive repr ... More

British artist Aeneas Wilder kicks down his installation of 10,000 wooden slats 'Untitled # 155' at the Yorkshire sculpture park near Barnsley, northern England. REUTERS/Nigel Roddis.

WAKEFIELD.- Yorkshire Sculpture Park presented the first major UK installation by international artist Aeneas Wilder. Wilder uses uniform lengths of wood, without fixing materials, to make freestanding and increasingly complex, awe-inspiring structures. Conceived especially for Longside Gallery, Untitled #155 commands the vast space, creating an apparently solid structure that is also extremely fragile. Wilder both references and challenges ideas about architecture by providing an enclosed, seemingly safe space for visitors to inhabit, but one which is unstable and liable to collapse. Wilder’s compositions dominate the spaces they occupy, encouraging visitors to enter and interact with the work. After three months on exhibition at YSP, Untitled #155 was completed with the UK’s first ‘kick down’ event, a powerful act executed by the artist that brought ... More

Large-scale installation by Jonathan Meese at Bortolami Gallery
NEW YORK, NY.- Bortolami presents Jonathan Meese’s third exhibition at the gallery, conceived as a continuation of his current Total Self-Portrait show at GEM (Museum voor Actuele Kunst) in The Hague, Netherlands. The exhibition includes a large-scale installation in the main space, in which photographs, posters, painted panels, bronze sculptures, paintings and wooden structures, act as a contemplation of himself as artist, a personal exploration of his assumed role. Since Meese’s days as a student, performance and installation have been a pivotal part of his art, both formally and in content, always related to theater and film. His installations have been platforms for his ideas about the autonomy of art, which he expresses in the ubiquitous term “Dictatorship of Art.” As remarked in the catalogue of his exhibition at GEM: “At first glance, Meese’s art has a raw, unscrupulous feel. First UK solo exhibition of US artist Laurel Nakadate at the Zabludowicz Collection
LONDON.- The Zabludowicz Collection is showing the first UK solo exhibition of US artist Laurel Nakadate including an important new body of work commissioned for the exhibition. Working in film, performance and photography, Nakadate often puts herself – her body and personal relationships – at the centre of the nexus of author, artwork and audience. She creates highly charged scenes that put in play relationships premised on gender, power and sexuality. Using a finely tuned emotional tone, Nakadate’s work demonstrates an unusual level of humanity, as she foregrounds vulnerability, emotion and sensitivity with a striking level of candour. Issues of identity, social class and mental health are central to her practice. Several recent works have focused on teenagers as cyphers for universal human struggles, and as lynchpins for understanding the highs and lows of popular culture. The exhibition brings ... More

Powerful and complex, high-definition video by Elodie Pong at Mother's Tankstation
DUBLIN.- And so even, though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I have a dream… that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."… I have a dream that my children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today! Taking any opportunity to remind ourselves of important objectives, it seems apposite to begin this short introductory text to Elodie Pong’s, After the Empire, with the core extract from the ‘immortal’ Martin ...
