Thousands send money to Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei to help pay tax bill

Commemorative ceramic seeds from Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei's "Sunflower Seeds" art installation are prepared in packets to send to people who contribute money to him, in Beijing, China, Monday, Nov. 7, 2011. Thousands of people have sent more than 5.3 million yuan ($840,000) to Ai, some tossing cash folded into airplanes over his gate, he said Monday, to help him pay a tax bill they see as government harassment. BEIJING (AP).- Thousands of people have sent more than $800,000 to Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei, some tossing cash folded into airplanes over his gate, to help him pay a tax bill they see as government harassment, he said Monday. A state-run newspaper criticized the outpouring and warned it could be illegal. The donation campaign — also in the form of wire transfers and cash stuffed in envelopes or wrapped around fruit that is thrown into his yard — is rare for Chinese dissidents because of the threat of retaliation that comes with supporting high-profile government critics. Nearly 20,000 people have sent more than 5.3 million yuan ($840,000) since he announced a week ago that the Beijing tax bureau was demanding that he pay 15 million yuan ($2.4 million) in back taxes and fines, Ai said. "This shows that a group of people who want to express their views are using their money to cast their votes," Ai told The Associated Press. "It shows that in the Internet age, ... More

NEW YORK, N.Y.- Gagosian Gallery presents an exhibition of recent paintings by Howard Hodgkin. In Hodgkin’s paintings, abstraction and figuration are held in perfect tension. Assertive compressed gestures, sweeping complex textures, a lush palette, and the dynamic interchange of light and dark are all hallmarks of his distinctive signature. Embracing spontaneity and directness in equal measure to the processes of reflection and capitulation, it may take a year of preparation to execute a single and instantaneous brushstroke. Containing maximalist gestures and saturated colors expressed in the effects of the brush, the more intimately scaled paintings appear jewel-like, while larger works are sumptuous and theatrical. With their incorporated frames and painted wooden supports, they operate as both objects and images. In each painting, Hodgkin’s subject is a presence that is sensed rather than apprehended, remaining ... More

A cave painting of pair of spotted horses, found in the Pech Merle Cave in Cabrerets, southern France. AP Photo/Center for Prehistory of Pech Merle, P. Cabrol.

By: Alicia Chang, AP Science Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP).- Cave painters during the Ice Age were more like da Vinci than Dali, sketching realistic depictions of horses they saw rather than dreaming them up, a study of ancient DNA finds. It's not just a matter of aesthetics: Paintings based on real life can give first-hand glimpses into the environment of tens of thousands of years ago. But scientists have wondered how much imagination went into animal drawings etched in caves around Europe. The latest analysis published online Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences focused on horses since they appeared most frequently on rock walls. The famed Lascaux Cave in the Dordogne region of southwest France and the Chauvet Cave in southeast France feature numerous scenes of brown and black horses. Other caves ... More

DENVER (AP).- Federal land managers announced a final decision Monday approving Christo's art proposal to suspend 5.9 miles worth of silvery, translucent fabric over a stretch of the Arkansas River, with measures aimed at protecting bighorn sheep and other wildlife. Christo's team still needs permits from two counties, the Colorado Department of Transportation and the State Patrol for the $50 million Over the River project, but construction is expected to start next year. It would be displayed for two weeks in August 2014 before being dismantled. The Bureau of Land Management had said in July its preferred alternative for the project stuck close to what Christo and his late wife, Jeanne-Claude, formally proposed. It's believed to be the first artwork to receive the agency's approval through the drafting of an environmental impact statement, ... More

NEW YORK, N.Y.- David Zwirner presents a selection of early work by Los Angeles artist Robert Graham (1938-2008), on view at 519 West 19th Street. The exhibition brings together rarely seen works that span the years 1963-1973, providing an overview and reconsideration of the artist’s initial engagement with Minimalism and figurative sculpture. In the early 1960s, while he was still attending the San Francisco Art Institute, Graham made miniature objects during idle moments as a Woolworth’s counter-salesman. Although the prevailing attitude of his abstract expressionist instructors favored large-scale objects, Graham’s early work included small-scale Plexiglas-encased environments populated by wax figurines engaged in leisurely and pleasurable activities. Ariella Azoulay "From Palestine to Israel" a photographic record of destruction & state formation, 1947-1950
LONDON.- This November, the Mosaic Rooms in Kensington presents an extraordinary photographic exhibition documenting the early years of the Israeli state, curated by celebrated visual theorist Ariella Azoulay. From Palestine to Israel is a collection of photographs, previously confined to Israeli state archives, which depict four crucial years in the history of Palestine/Israel: 1947 to 1950. This is the first time that many of these images have been shown outside Israel. Through over 200 striking images, Azoulay provides a new account of the first years of the Israeli State and its relationship with the remaining Palestinians, a subject that has been previously ignored or only partially acknowledged in both Israel and the West. The photographs featured tell the story of how the Palestinian majority in Mandatory Palestine became a minority in Israel, while the Jewish minority established a new political entity in which it ... Steven Pearson creates "Amalgamations": Tracings of earlier paintings at Studio H
WASHINGTON, D.C.- We are all subject to a flood of information on a daily, if not hourly, basis via a variety of technological means- emails, text messages, Facebook, Twitter, online newspapers, countless websites, as well as television and radio. With such a wide array of information from so many sources, one is obligated to discern what is true, verifiable, and good; and what is false, speculative, inflammatory, and bad. Steven Pearson is interested in how our ability to receive and assimilate a myriad of information on a constant basis can be reflected in a 2-dimensional format. In his paintings, he employs complex compositions and an autobiographical visual language consisting of codes and symbols. Each painting possesses a layered history- as new statements are juxtaposed next to or on top of earlier ones, the paintings begin to suggest the manner in which we store memories or assimilate and make sense ...
