CHEMNITZ.- The first exhibition worldwide marking the 90th birthday of Françoise Gilot will opened on 26 November 2011 at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. On show are drawings dating from 1941 to 2010. After the retrospective exhibition in 2003 “Françoise Gilot – Painting,” this is the second show of works by the artist and author of Life with Picasso at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz. Françoise Gilot adopted her own particular position at a very early stage in her career as an artist, influenced mainly by her travels to India and Greece, and later to Egypt. Gilot strives to harmonize the organic and the abstract. She has produced more than 1,500 paintings and over 5,000 drawings and prints to date. The retrospective exhibition “FRANÇOISE GILOT on her 90th Birthday. Drawings 1941 – 2010” at the Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz is exclusively of her drawings, the majority of which are in color. “One of the reasons I like works on paper so much is that throug ... More

SAN FRANCISCO, CA.- With 79 percent of the capital campaign goal raised two years ahead of the groundbreaking for the expansion of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the museum's Board of Trustees has approved visitor- and city-friendly enhancements to the original design program and, in turn, has raised the capital campaign goal to $555 million from $480 million, an increase of 15 percent. These additional funds will enable the museum to increase the number and types of spaces dedicated to education, public engagement, exhibitions, collections, and programs. Expanding strategically on the conceptual design announcement made in May 2011, SFMOMA today unveiled new design details including ground-level galleries and orientation spaces that will be free to the public and new educational spaces throughout the museum. The design also features new pedestrian pathways that lead to and through the museum from the surrounding stree ... More

The plate is thought to have been purchased by the vendor’s family in Italy between 1894 and 1916. Celia Curnow, ceramics consultant to Lyon & Turnbull said “I have waited more than thirty years to see a piece of this quality outside a museum.” In his 2007 exhibition held at London’s Wallace Collection devoted to Xanto, curator John Mallett, former Keeper of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London described Xanto as “Pottery-Painter, Poet, Man of the Italian Renaissance.” Xanto Avelli was born in Italy, about 1486. Jean-Antoine Watteau (Valenciennes 1684-1721), La Surprise, oil on panel, 14.1/2 x 11.1/2 in. (36.3 x 28.2 cm.) Estimate: £3,000,000 - £5,000,000. Christie's Images Ltd 2008.

NEW YORK, N.Y.- Antoine Watteau’s magnificent picture La Surprise has long been deemed a masterpiece of eighteenth-century French painting by scholars and connoisseurs. The panel was originally in the collection of Nicolas Hénin (1691–1724), Councilor to the King and a close friend of the artist, for whom it may have been painted. The work then entered several prestigious Parisian collections before ending up in England and disappearing from public view. Unpublished, unexhibited, and presumed lost for nearly two hundred years, La Surprise was discovered in an English private collection in 2007. The current owner’s generosity has made it possible for this important example from Watteau’s oeuvre to be admired by visitors to The Frick Collection, where the picture will be on loan for two years beginning in November of 2011. It is installed in the North Hall, near works by other French artists, ... More

Claude Michel, known as Clodion, Satyr and Nymph. Terracotta. Photo: Linn Ahlgren/Nationalmuseum.

STOCKHOLM.- At an ordinary public auction this past April, Nationalmuseum purchased a magnificent terracotta sculpture by French artist Claude Michel, known as Clodion. The piece, thought to date from the 1780s, depicts a satyr embracing a young nymph. Clodion’s superb attention to detail and perfect balancing of the two figures makes this one of his most significant works. Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was two years the senior and a colleague of the Swedish sculptor Johan Tobias Sergel during his time in Rome. Clodion never completely abandoned the graceful rococo style. Not surprisingly, he was popular with collectors, but he was never elected to the Académie in his native France. The terracotta sculpture of a satyr embracing a nymph, purchased by Nationalmuseum at a public auction held by Stockholms Auktionsverk in April, typifies Clodion’s work in many respects. This piece, which probably dates from the ... More
