PITTSBURGH (AP).- Charles "Teenie" Harris had a photographic mission: going beyond the obvious or sensational to capture the essence of daily African-American life in the 20th century For more than 40 years, Harris — as lead photographer of the influential Pittsburgh Courier newspaper — took almost 80,000 pictures of people from all walks: presidents, housewives, sports stars, babies, civil rights leaders and even cross-dressing drag queens. Now, a new exhibit and online catalog is showing the depth of Harris' work, an archive showing a major artistic achievement that influenced people around the country. "His shots of everyday people are amazing. People seem to kind of jump off the page," said Stanley Nelson, an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker and MacArthur genius grant winner who has made a number of acclaimed films on African-American artists, business people, and workers. ... LONDON.- This autumn’s Russian Art Sale in London will feature Vasily Vereshchagin’s awe-inspiring Crucifixion by the Romans, painted in 1887 in Paris. It will be offered on 28th November with an estimate of £1,000,000-1,500,000. The picture will be sold to benefit the acquisitions fund of the Brooklyn Museum, where it was exhibited for the last time in 1932. “After conducting a careful review of the Museum’s late-19th and 20th-century Russian holdings, we came to the conclusion that Crucifixion by the Romans by Vasily Vereshchagin does not represent the focus of the collection, which is on modern and avant-garde Russian art. The painting deserves to be better utilized than it has been at Brooklyn, where it was last on view in 1932. We did not foresee a time when it would be ... More

At the same time he made use of art history, drawing on works by artists such as Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning, and other representatives of Pop Art and Minimal Art. PHILADELPHIA (AP).- One of the world's rarest and most valuable books is out of the vault and on public view as part of an unusual daily ritual at the nation's oldest natural history museum. Every weekday at 3:15 p.m., a white-gloved staff member of the Academy of Natural Sciences lifts the locked protective cover from 19th century naturalist John James Audubon's influential book, "The Birds of America," and turns a large linen-backed page to reveal the bird of the day. More than 180 years after Audubon created the life-size illustrations that now link his name with ornithology, their vibrant watercolors and fine details are still remarkable. "Many times these were framed as artworks and faded from exposure to light," said curator Robert Peck, who does many of the page turnings. "Ours weren't exposed to light, so they're in wonderful condition." The Academy of Natural ... More

Unknown photographer, Feine Schäfchen. Ci.-Cu, from: Wolken im Luftmeer (Delicate fluffy clouds. Ci.-Cu, from: Clouds in a sea of air). Photographs taken by German fighter pilots during WW1, Berlin, 1917.

WINTERTHUR.- The English pharmacist and meteorologist Luke Howard wrote in 1802 in the preface to his manuscript On the Modification of Clouds: “Clouds are subject to certain distinct modifications, produced by the general causes which affect all the variations of the atmosphere; they are commonly as good visible indicators of the operation of these causes, as is the countenance of the state of a person’s mind or body.” Eighty years later, meteorologists had still not reached a consensus on how to classify, label, and read the forms of clouds. It was during this time that scientists first began using photography to record and measure clouds. With its help, they attempted to gain precise and accurate images that would provide insight on the interplay between clouds and the atmosphere and which could be used to create and convey a classification of cloud forms. The exhibition CLOUD STUDIES – The Scientific View of the Sky presents six stages of meteorological c ... More

ALLIANCE, NE (REUTERS).- For sale: 38 vintage automobiles. Price: $300,000. Mystical and entertainment value: Priceless. Carhenge, America's answer to England's Stonehenge, is for sale. The Friends of Carhenge put the full-scale automotive replica of the prehistoric circle of stones on the sale block because the organization lacked capital and volunteers to maintain the quirky tourist attraction, said Marcia Buck, the group's president. "This wasn't easy...," she said. "We've spent many a sleepless night wondering if it's the best thing to do." Buck said it's time for an entrepreneur to take the steering wheel and drive Carhenge into the future. Carhenge will mark its 25th anniversary next year. The Carhenge autos mimic the Stonehenge stones in size, dimension and northeast orientation to the sunrise. The attraction consists of 38 gray-painted autos in a 96-foot circle. Some are buried five feet deep, trunk end down. Some ju ... More

Vladimir Ovchinnikov, The Illustionist, 2011. Oil on canvas.

LONDON.- Erarta Galleries London presents a selection of new and recent works by Vladimir Ovchinnikov. One of the most significant artists to emerge from St. Petersburg during the Soviet era, Vladimir Ovchinnikov is known for his paintings that blur the boundaries between realism and surrealism, fusing together contemporary Russian subject matter with magical, fantastic elements, often derived from myth and religion. His distinctively rotund, heavy-bodied, yellow-skinned figures have a primeval, statuesque quality, as if stemming from ancient monuments or religious icons – and yet at the same time his works also allude to social and political conditions, vividly satirizing contemporary mores, and puncturing the hypocrisy and spiritual bankruptcy at the heart of everyday life. A pioneer of the nonconformist movement, in which artists rebelled against the State aesthetic of Socialist Realism, Ovchinnikov co-organiz ... More

Unseen Michael Jackson film valued at $6-8 million goes unsold at Fame Bureau auctioneers
LONDON (REUTERS).- Previously unseen footage of Michael Jackson's 1993 "Dangerous" tour, which had been expected to fetch 4-5 million pounds ($6.2-7.8 million) failed to sell at auction in Britain on Saturday. "At this stage it has not sold," said a spokesman for The Fame Bureau auctioneers, who specialize in pop memorabilia. "We are still talking to people, but online it did not sell." He said he was confident a buyer would be found, although "nothing is a certainty." The auction house said it had been forced to remove a brief clip of the video from its website before the online auction after Jackson's record label made a "copyright claim." The fact that a successful buyer may not be able to use the film for commercial purposes may have dampened demand given the hefty asking price, but the spokesman played down the copyright dispute. "I don't think that was a problem at all," he said, adding that any serious ... More

By: Ari Rabinovitch
TEL AVIV (REUTERS).- Tel Aviv's recently expanded modern art museum, with its dazzling new building no less an attraction than the art showcased inside, has given a home to hundreds of displaced Israeli works and helped boost the city's cultural scene. The new wing, designed by Massachusetts architect Preston Scott Cohen, has doubled the size of the Tel Aviv Museum of Art by 19,000 square metres (200,000 square feet) and lured a growing number of art fans through its new, triangular concrete and glass complex since its November 3 unveiling. "There has never been an exhibit that fully reflected Israeli art, and now there is," said the museum's acting director Shuli Kislev. "Tel Aviv received a wonderful gift." The reason for the four-year, $50 million building project, she said, was to provide ... More

Once Removed: Tania Theodorou & Adam Etmanski at Seelevel Gallery
AMSTERDAM.- The exhibition Once Removed is an open ended visual chitchat between Tania Theodorou, Adam Etmanski and the audience about the way they both approach meaning, photography, and the presentation of it in an original and idiosyncratic way. The Greek artist Tania Theodorou uses images and objects that already sustain evidence of significance or function. She attempts to set them loose, into a new context, and see to what kind of meaning they are able to attach themselves. She likes to see the process by which the very meaning of a work can take on different nuances. This leads to layered installations where the work is in a kind of open-ended conversation with itself and the audience. There is a lot of appropriation and re working of pre-existing images in the works of Tania. Objects are approached in a fanciful way in an effort to distil a feeling of essence. Tania Theodorou (1977) initiated Dead ... More
