The Wine of Saint Martin's Day by Bruegel the Elder now on display at the Museo del Prado

The definitive attribution to Pieter Bruegel the Elder of The Wine of Saint Martin’s Day represents one of the most important discoveries in many years with regard to the oeuvre of this artist, a figure of even greater importance than Quintin Massys and Joachim Patinir, the two other leading Flemish painters of the 16th century.

MADRID.- The Museo del Prado is presenting to the public for the first time The Wine of Saint Martin’s Day by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, the leading figure within 16th-century Flemish painting. Following the recent acquisition and subsequent restoration of the painting, it will be displayed in Room D in the Jerónimos Building until 25 March. In addition to highlighting the exceptional nature of a new discovery and acquisition of a work by Pieter Bruegel the Elder (of whom only 41 paintings are known), the presentation of the painting alongside an x-ray of it and an explanatory video detailing its restoration will allow the visiting public to appreciate the key phases within its complex restoration and to assess the final results of that process. ... JERUSALEM (AP).- Fifty years after Holocaust mastermind Adolf Eichmann was convicted in an epic trial that helped shape Israel's national psyche, the Israeli parliament on Monday put on display for the first time dozens of artifacts from the daring 1960 operation in Argentina that captured the Nazi criminal. The gripping public testimony during the trial by more than 100 Jews who survived torture and deprivation captured world attention and vividly brought to life the horrors of the Holocaust. It also brought to light stories of Jewish bravery and resistance that shattered the myth of Jews meekly walking to their deaths. As a result, more survivors went public with their experiences, which greatly helped research and commemoration efforts. "We carried out justice, partial, reduced, even minuscule compared to the crime, but of tremendous symbolism and the symbolism is that those who murder millions and those ... More

NEW YORK, N.Y.- The extraordinary beauty, rarity and provenance of the pearl known as “La Peregrina” inspired a fierce bidding battle at Christie’s New York at the opening auction of The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor. Estimated at $2-3 million, the pearl reached a world auction record price for a pearl at $11,842,500 (£ 7,579,200 / € 9,118,725) after four and a half minutes of bidding. The pearl, an historic 16th century pear-shaped pearl suspended from a necklace custom-designed for Ms. Taylor by Cartier, has been widely heralded as one of Elizabeth Taylor’s most iconic jewels. La Peregrina is a remarkable pearl of 203 grains in size – equivalent to 50 carats – that was first discovered in the 1500s in the Gulf of Panama. WASHINGTON (AP).- Alexander Graham Bell foresaw many things, including that people could someday talk over a telephone. But the inventor certainly never could have anticipated that his audio-recording experiments in a Washington, D.C., lab could be recovered 130 years later and played for a gathering of scientists, curators and journalists. "To be or not to be..." a man's voice can be heard saying in one recording as it was played on a computer at the Library of Congress on Tuesday. The speaker from the 1880s recites a portion of Hamlet's Soliloquy as a green wax disc crackles to life from computer speakers. The early audio recordings — which revealed recitations of Shakespeare, numbers and other familiar lines — had been packed away and deemed obsolete at the Smithsonian Institution for more than a century. But new technology has allowed them to be recovered and played. The technology reads the sound from tiny ... More

John Singer Sargent, Miss Priestley, c. 1889, oil on canvas; 91.4 x 63.5 cm; London, Tate, presented by Miss Emily Sargent in memory of her brother through the Art Fund 1929, N04465

FLORENCE.- Americans in Florence. Sargent and the American Impressionists on view at Palazzo Strozzi, Florence , from 3 March to 15 July 2012, sets out to illustrate the extremely fertile and multifaceted relationship that the painters of the New World established with Florence and other cities in Tuscany between the mid 19th century and the World War 1. After the end of the American Civil War, there was a substantial increase in the number of American artists travelling to Europe , although, of course, the 18th century Grand Tour tradition had never really died. The painters’ main destinations were Florence , Venice and Rome , cities which the artists idolised in their eagerness to explore their ancient monuments and to take their own measure against the art of the past. They were also attracted by the charm and variety ... More

LONDON.- White Cube Bermondsey presents a new exhibition of work by the internationally renowned artist Anselm Kiefer. Staged across 11,000 sq ft of gallery space, 'Il Mistero delle Cattedrali' is the largest presentation of Kiefer's work ever made in London. The title of the exhibition is taken from the esoteric publication by Fulcanelli (published in 1926), which claimed that the Gothic cathedrals of Europe had openly displayed the hidden code of alchemy for over 700 years. As with all Kiefer's work, allusions are never literal but reflect an ongoing interest in systems - mystical and material - which have evolved over centuries. Both title and exhibition reflect Kiefer's longtime fascination with the transformative nature of alchemy: 'The ideology of alchemy is the hastening of time, as in the lead-silver-gold cycle which needed ... GENEVA.- The Hôtel des Ventes in Geneva was the scene of a historic moment as more than 300 original and unpublished photographs of the last Tsars of Russia were sold for a record price of almost CHF 1.6 million. Out of a total of 28 lots of photographs, 26 lots were sold for more than 100 times the estimated price, an exceptional result for a sale at auction of this type. It was only at the end of a fierce fight between several bidders in the room or over the telephone speaking French, Russian, and English that the vast majority of this collection was sold to a Swiss collector. The final destination of these photographs cannot yet be revealed. The sales closed to thunderous applause. Bernard Piguet , director and chief auctioneer said: “The results of this auction exceed all expectations, ... More

Dana Melamed opens first exhibition at Lesley Heller Workspace
NEW YORK, NY.- Lesley Heller presents the sculptures and wall pieces of Dana Melamed. It is her first show with the gallery. This exhibition represents an important milestone in Melamed’s work, namely the transition from wall pieces with three dimensional elements to sculptures, expanding her narrative of the ongoing power struggle between humanity and nature. In her previous exhibitions, Melamed has been dealing with the effects of human aggression against nature and mankind. The primal drive for survival is ingrained in both the human organism and nature, thus the struggle is a never ending cycle. In her new work, Melamed is disengaging from the walls to create sculptures in the form of bio-mechanical structures, symbolizing the outcome of the struggle. She focuses on DNA, the genetic code programmed into every living organism, which dictates much of its behavior. Battle lines are drawn at the “transitional v ... More

Georgia Museum of Art exhibits 30 pieces of Lycett china
ATHENS, GA.- The exhibition “Lycett China” is on display at the Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia through March 4 in the museum’s Martha Thompson Dinos Gallery. Edward Lycett was a porcelain painter who emigrated from Great Britain to New York in 1861. By the early 1880s, his son William and his family had settled in Atlanta and opened a studio devoted to porcelain decoration. The exhibition features close to 30 pieces of china from the Atlanta studio. Although the Lycett firm is best known for its white china with gold trim, most of the pieces that are featured in the exhibition are paint decorated. Lycett china was a staple among upper-middle-class Georgia society. “The painted and gilded china the Lycett firm produced became common in numerous Georgia households of the late 19th and early 20th century,” said Dale Couch, GMOA’s adjunct curator of decorative arts, who organ ...
