VIENNA.- Cindy Sherman began studying painting in 1972, at the age of eighteen, at the State University of New York, Buffalo. In 1975, she changed her major from painting to photography. She graduated in 1976 and left Buffalo the following year to move to New York City. Contrary to previous assumption, the famous Untitled Film Stills (1977-1980) were not Shermans first works. In fact, during the time from 1975 to 1977 in Buffalo, she produced an extensive body of early work that would become the foundation for her future oeuvre. Sherman developed her understanding of the contemporary art movements of the era at Hallwalls, an exhibition center run by the artists themselves, which was founded in November 1974 by Shermans then boyfriend Robert Longo and Charles Clough. Through the busy visiting artist program at Hallwalls, she got to know Vito Acconci, Bruce Nauman, and Chris Burden. However, for Sherman, several women artists were, in her words, role models, ... NEW YORK, NY.- Contemporary Romantic painter Annika Connor is showing pieces from her latest collections at the Bungalow 5 from November 9th to December 9th, 2011. The exhibition titled Tuxedo Park brings together the decadent interiors of an era gone by with sumptuous landscapes from an imagined garden. Playing off the name of the local Orange County village, Tuxedo Park harkens back to an idealized world while showcasing Connors interpretation of whimsical romanticism. Displayed in Bungalow 5s opulent urban setting, this exhibition couples elegant modern furniture with Connors lush and nostalgic watercolor paintings. Mona Kuhn. Bordeaux Series. Book Cover. Steidl November 2011.
BORDEAUX.- Each year Mona Kuhn embarks on a twenty-six hour crossing, through 9 time zones, from her house in Los Angeles to her small isolated home on a remote region near Bordeaux, France. There is no electricity but a collection of oil lamps. The house is minimal with no superfluous material items, but there is an abundance of spirit. During the course of this yearly interval, existing here provides a sanctuary of simple life in an unembellished dwelling. Time spent is cherished by extended family and friends. Bordeaux Series, a collection of images taken there, is the subject of Kuhns fourth book. She has photographed her friends and loved ones in the same room with a red fabric backdrop and a chair, so that the nudity of each sitter is the only indication of his or her idiosyncrasies. In the text that accompanies the images, she writes: As I step into this house, I enter a parallel ... DUBAI.- Green Art Gallery announces the first solo exhibition in the UAE for renowned Syrian painter Ziad Dalloul. Organized in collaboration with Atassi Gallery, Damascus, the exhibition opened on November 13th and will be on view until January 5th 2012. A reception was held on the 13th of November from 7 - 9 pm in the presence of the artist. Considered to be among the most accomplished Arab painters and printmakers, Dalllouls works merge contemporary disciplines with traditional materials such as ink, sepia and handmade paper. The subjects of his work involve stagnant, commonplace domestic objects such as chairs and tables, which are placed on the foreground of landscapes depicting natures virility in some form. The landscapes depicted in the works, often recollections of those found in his birthplace Syria, are however accompanied by characteristic dark masses of color. ... More
Crew Portraits, from Ship of Fools, 1999-2010, Allan Sekula. Courtesy of Galerie Michel Rein, Paris.
EDINBURGH.- Stills' Social Documents programme continues with Allan Sekula's photographic and filmic mappings of modern life. Whether documenting labour conditions, the material flow of goods or protest movements, economic themes have dominated Sekula's work since the early 1970s. Informed by both conceptual art and the history of social documentary photography his 'critical realist' approach brings together text and images to examine the complex social realities produced by the globalisation of economic structures. In 1995 Tramway presented Sekula's epic photographic installation Fish Story which explored the worlds of seafaring, ports and harbours in the era of advanced capitalism. For Stills he returns once again to the subject of maritime space to present his recent series of photographs Ship of Fools alongside his award-winning documentary film The Forgotten Space. Together, they examine the sea as a space of trade, wor ... More
Meanings seem to be thrust upon us. Photo: Courtesy Rod Barton.
LONDON.- The show seems to be about meaning as a thing-in-itself - how we read things and come to understand things. It is the broader conversation that keeps cropping up in my thoughts about the work included: How does meaning arrive? Why do we assign certain meanings to certain things? What constitutes a meaning? Does everything have meaning? Can anything be a meaning? Why are some meanings more valid than others? Meanings seem to be thrust upon us. It feels like meanings are not allowed to be how they naturally are and instead are forced down particular avenues for no valid reason. Any reasoning that diverts from these avenues is considered absurd. To restrict and push things to a certain meaning seems to be starving things of their potential. It feels like we have become slightly deluded, become so casual in reading things in certain ways that we are missing the point, blind to most of the information that is available to us, relying on the fictional meanings created by us, ...
