LIVERPOOL.- Lewis Carroll?s timeless novels, Alice?s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, have fascinated and inspired many generations of artists since the first novel was published over 150 years ago. Alice in Wonderland at Tate Liverpool is the first exhibition to provide a comprehensive historical exploration of how the stories have influenced the visual arts, providing insight into the creation of the novels, the adoption of the text as an inspiration for artists and the revision of its key themes by artists up to the present day. The starting point for the exhibition is Carroll?s original manuscript, given to the twelve year old Alice Liddell as a Christmas present in 1864. Carroll?s own illustrations in the manuscript, and the famous illustrations by Sir John Tenniel in the first published edition, indicate that images were an integral part of the story, creating a visual world which took on a life of its own. Carroll was very much part of the art sc ... More

Marcahuamachuco marks the site of Pre-Incan ruins and is often referred to by archaeologists as “Machu Picchu of the North” and the “Jewel of La Libertad.”

HUAMACHUCO.- If you ask Alejandro Figueroa, Global Heritage Fund’s Project Site director at Marcahuamachuco what her take on cultural heritage is, she’d say her personal stake in the preservation of this mysterious, ancient site is twofold. “As an archaeologist, I want to see the site protected and prepared to survive… As a Peruvian citizen, I cannot ignore the many needs of my country’s population, and the desire for improving their quality of life…Marcahuamachuco has great potential to…strengthen the bond between people from Huamachuco and their cultural heritage and Peru’s past...” Figueroa, who has worked on many archaeological missions across Peru, is working closely with the Unidad Ejecutivo Marcahaumachuco (UEM) to ensure the best preservation practices and community ... "Two laughing boys" by Frans Hals.

THE HAGUE (AP).- Police recovered two stolen paintings by Dutch masters and handed them back Thursday to the provincial museum they were stolen from five months ago. Three suspects are in custody, police said. The 17th-century paintings, a depiction of two laughing boys by Frans Hals and a forest landscape by Jacob van Ruisdael, were snatched from the Hofje van Mevrouw van Aerden museum in the central town of Leerdam in late May. The thieves triggered a burglar alarm, but had fled the building before police arrived. A search of the area immediately after the theft turned up only the frame of one of the paintings that had been dumped in a hedge. A new tip about the paintings' whereabouts led to their discovery on Oct. 28, police said in a statement. A fourth suspect is on the run, police said. Police have not estimated the value of the paintings, but called them valuable parts of the country's "cultural heritage." ... More

George Hendrik Breitner: Pioneer of Street Photography at the Paris Photo Fair
PARIS.- For the first time in France, the Rijksmuseum, in collaboration with the Institut Néerlandais, has mounted a large retrospective exhibition of photographs taken around 1900 by the Dutch artist George Hendrik Breitner (1857-1923). Breitner is known mainly as a painter of cityscapes, nudes and genre studies. In the present exhibition, however, he emerges as one of the most intriguing photographers of his day, who recorded life in Amsterdam and other large cities such as Paris and Berlin in an eminently modern and personal style. The exhibition runs from 3 November 2011 to 22 January 2012, during Paris Photo, as part of the VIP programme of this major international photo fair. Precisely a century ago, it became clear that Breitner was not only a major painter but also an excellent photographer. China's Ai Weiwei will fight tax charges "to the death"
BEIJING (REUTERS).- Dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei vowed Wednesday to fight tax evasion charges "to the death," a day after the government ordered a company linked to him to pay 15 million yuan ($2.4 million) in back taxes and fines. The 54-year-old artist, who has been a thorn in the government's side for his satirical art and criticism of contemporary China, was detained without charge for 81 days this year in a move that drew criticism from Western governments. He was released in late June on condition that he not talk to foreign media, since when he has mainly kept to himself and has been reluctant to accept interviews. But in a two-hour interview with Reuters, Ai, who had a hand in designing the Bird's Nest stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, showed flashes of his previously fiery self. "Will a person like Ai Weiwei surrender?" In my dictionary, there's no such word 'surrender'," the bearded artist said ... More

Installations made entirely of sugar and salt in Ken + Julia's first UK solo show at GV Art
LONDON.- Sense of Taste at GV Art by Ken and Julia Yonetani is inspired by the 1618 painting by Jan Brueghel the Elder of the same name. One of a series on the five senses, it depicts a new world based on unfettered consumption of luxury goods, at a time when expanding markets, colonisation and agricultural revolutions were feeding the increasingly lavish and abundant tables of the European upper class. Nearly 400 years later, Ken and Julia Yonetani’s Sense of Taste ponders our obsession with sensual and material pleasures, reconnecting our sense of taste to the environmental impacts of what is on the dinner table. The exhibition comprises two main works, Sweet Barrier Reef and Still Life, the first made out of sugar and the second made entirely from salt. Both works explore ideas of human desire, colonialism, a culture of hedonism, and global food security, as well as reconnect us back to a spiritual world ... More

"Working Together" exhibition by Claire Fontaine at Metro Pictures
NEW YORK, N.Y.- Paris-based collective artist Claire Fontaine presents “Working Together,” her first exhibition at Metro Pictures. Founded in 2004 Fontaine lifted her name from a brand of French notebooks and stationery to develop a practice largely based on the elaboration of existing forms and materials. In an attempt to identify the transformed position of “the artist” Fontaine conceived the “ready-made artist,” which considers the contemporary artist as equivalent to the urinal or Brillo Box. Examining society’s visible and invisible cooperative systems, “Working Together” focuses on the delicate balance between independence and complicity. The sculptures, videos, paintings and neon signs in the exhibition explore conflict as an inherent aspect of working together while also addressing cooperation as essential to both struggle and daily life. By: Lisa Rathke, Associated Press
PLAINFIELD, NY (AP).- A 100-year-old Japanese artist donated his works to Vermont's Goddard College on Thursday, saying it was his dream to have the art kept at a school where students could learn from it. Hide Oshiro, a painter, poet, book maker, and illustrator, from Newburgh, N.Y., presented hundreds of pieces of his art, including numerous sketches, to the small liberal arts college. But Oshiro didn't talk about his art during his visit. He talked about life and how to live it. "You know everything already, everything. And you've got everything you need," he told the Goddard staff in his heavily accented English. That includes the sun, earth, space, air, plant kingdom, animal kingdom, beautiful society, he said. "We've got it; We've got it," said Oshiro, who was born in Hawaii and grew ... More
