Through a selection of works spanning fifty years, this new body of work will be placed in the context of Hockney’s extended exploration of and fascination with landscape. Highlights will include three groups of new work made since 2005, when Hockney returned to live in Bridlington, showing an intense observation of his surroundings in a variety of media. The exhibition will reveal the artist’s emotional engagement with the landscape he knew in his youth, as he examines on a daily basis the changes in the seasons, the cycle of growth and variations in light conditions. C'est la vie: Photography since 1940 opens at the Swiss National Museum in Zurich   Christie's to sell Elizabeth Taylor art collection including a Vincent van Gogh landscape   Two portraits by celebrated Irish artist Sir William Orpen to headline Sotheby's London sale

Visitors look at images, during the opening of the exhibition 'C'est la vie. Press Pictures since 1940', at the Swiss National Museum.

ZURICH.- For the first time, the Swiss National Museum in Zurich presents its extensive archive of press photographs. The exhibition looks at recent Swiss history from
the perspective of the press photographer and reveals how, in the second half of the 20th century, press photography developed into the photojournalism we know today. Housed in three original pavilions by the designer and engineer Jean Prouvé from the 1940s, «C’est la vie» includes meticulously composed photographs depicting political events, episodes from everyday life, unforgettable moments, candid pictures of well-known personalities and portraits of everyday heroes. It also shows how the extensive photo reportages of the early years were superseded by individual snapshots – initially still in black and white, then in colour. New methods of image transfer and printing technologies enabled ever-increasing ... More

The daughter of a London art dealer, Taylor amassed a significant collection of 19th and 20th century works. Her father, Francis Taylor, bought the van Gogh painting in 1963 on his daughter's behalf for $257,600 at a Sotheby's auction in London. It was later the subject of an ownership battle that ended in 2007, when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to consider a claim brought by descendants ... More

LONDON.- The Little Black Gallery presents Yul Brynner: A Photographic Journey on view from January 11 through February 11, 2012. Yul Brynner’s reputation as one of the twentieth century’s most charismatic and versatile actors is irrefutable. But his talent as a photographer has been relatively unknown and unacknowledged. Brynner’s subjects are some of the pivotal figures of cinematic and stage history, and his talent lies in capturing these people and particularly actors (those best at disguising their true selves) at ease, both on and off set: Charlton Heston as Moses in The Ten Commandments, Audrey Hepburn in a gondola in Venice, Elizabeth Taylor relaxing poolside. The exhibition has been put together by Brynner’s daughter Victoria Brynner, and coincides with the recently published book of the same name. Yul Brynner was an actor, director, musician and photographer. One of Hollywood’ ... More

Pablo Neruda, poet and then Chilean ambassador to France, talks with reporters in Paris. AP Photo/Laurent Rebours.

By: Eva Vergara, Associated Press

ISLA NEGRA (AP).- The suspicions have lingered for decades. Pablo Neruda, Chile's Nobel Prize-winning poet, would have been a powerful voice in exile against the dictatorship of Gen. Augusto Pinochet. But that all changed just 24 hours before Neruda was to flee the country in the chaos following the 1973 military coup. He was 69 years old and suffering from prostate cancer when he died, exactly 12 days after the brutal coup that ended the life of his close friend, socialist President Salvador Allende. The official version was that he died of natural causes brought on by the trauma of witnessing the coup and the lethal persecution of many of his friends. Some Chileans have questioned that official telling of Neruda's death and instead suspected foul play at the hands of Pinochet's ... More

BERKELEY, CA (AP).- On a bluff overlooking a sweep of Southern California beach, scientists in 1976 unearthed what were among the oldest skeletal remains ever found in the Western Hemisphere. Researchers would come to herald the bones — dating back nearly 10,000 years — as a potential treasure trove for understanding the earliest human history of the continental United States. But a local tribal group called the Kumeyaay Nation claimed that the bones, representing at least two people, were their ancestors and demanded them back several years ago. For decades, fights like this over the provenance and treatment of human bones have played out across the nation. Yet new federal protections could mean that the vast ... More

Musée d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris presents "Hybrid Witness" by Eko Nugroho
PARIS.- In Paris since September, at the Villa Raffet as part of a residency programme by SAM Art Projects, Eko Nugroho is an Indonesian artist born in Yogyakarta in 1977. Following the exhibition by Inci Eviner organised by SAM Art Projects in 2011, the Musée dʼArt moderne de la Ville de Paris integrates the exhibition « Témoin hybride » (Hybrid Witness ) by Eko Nugroho into its permanent collections. The artist has taken possession of the space by covering the floor, walls and ceiling with mural paintings. He also presents around twenty canvases made during his time in Paris, hybrid characters somewhere between monsters and teenagers, bringing an unsettling and ironic point of view. These canvases alternate with imposing embroideries, a traditional technique hijacked by the artist, sculptures and characters seemingly from science-fiction and an animated film which is both playful and unsettling.
