MADRID.- From 15 November and for the first time in Spain, the Museo Thyssen‐Bornemisza is presenting a retrospective exhibition on the work of the female Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot. Through an important agreement reached with the Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris, more than 30 works from that collection will be shown alongside one loaned from the Fondatión Pierre Gianadda in Martigny (Switzerland) and others from the Thyssen collections. As a result, visitors will be able to appreciate Morisot’s elegant and luminous style, expressed in landscapes, scenes of everyday life and intimate female portraits. The thematic and chronological structure of the exhibition has been structured to run in parallel to the artist’s life and is divided into the following sections: Corot and outdoor Painting; Manet and the intimate Portrait; Painting Life, living Painting; Parks and Gardens; and The rural ... Beginning November 15, over 30 chessmen from the collection of the British Museum will be shown at The Cloisters, the branch of The Metropolitan Museum of Art devoted to the art and architecture ... Crusader inscription in Arabic bearing the name of Frederick II, "King of Jerusalem" found   Medieval to Modern: Sotheby's sale of European sculpture and works of art spans 800 years   Sotheby's announces upcoming African & Oceanic art auction in Paris this December

An inscription in Arabic which bears the name of the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II and the date "1229 of the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus the Messiah." EPA/ISRAEL ANTIQUITIES AUTHORITY.

JERUSALEM.- An Arabic inscription that bears the name of the Holy Roman Emperor, Frederick II, and the date “1229 of the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus the Messiah”, was recently deciphered by Professor Moshe Sharon and Ami Shrager of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. During the deciphering it became evident that this is a rare archaeological find – the only one of its kind. The 800-years-old inscription was fixed years ago in the wall of a building in Tel Aviv. The original location of the gray marble slab, on which the inscription is engraved, was probably in Jaffa’s city wall. As Professor Sharon relates, "Frederick II led the Sixth Crusade of 1228-1229 and succeeded, without resorting to arms, in achieving major territorial gains for the Crusader Kingdom. His most important feat was the handing ... More

Yoruba, Nago Horse-Rider, Benin. Haut. 47,5 cm., 18 1/2 in. Estimate: 400 000-600 000 €. Photo: Sotheby's.

PARIS.- Sotheby’s next sale of African & Oceanic Art in Paris on December 14 will include a highly selective ensemble of 100 lots. Some have remarkable provenance, whilst others are appearing on the market for the first time. The two Yoruba/Nago altar-figures which Sotheby’s has to offer for sale are extraordinary for both their quality and rarity. Very few altar-figures from this part of Benin are known. They are the work of a remarkably talented and imaginative artist, and served as complementary ritual items intended for a specific altar. As with many ancient altar and veranda figures, they reflect how Yoruba society was balanced between the assertive power of men, as hunter-warriors and horsemen, and the concealed, more intimate power of women (est. €400,000-600,000 each). VIENNA.- For the opening of the 21er Haus, invitations were extended to artists who raise questions about the social and institutional significance of the museum and address the new venue and its history. Each artistic intervention approaches the site in an individual way and contributes to an open field of experimentation, in which different artistic disciplines can encounter each other and overlap. The various approaches chosen by the artists reflect a broad spectrum: Marcus Geiger’s parody of official symbols representing the state features flags and red carpets that have left their usual context. In the sunlit rooms of the 21er Haus, Franz West places emphasis on the moonlight and its special qualities. Florian Hecker’s sound piece, a chimera of sound and voice with a hallucinatory effect, has grown from an artistic collaboration. While Oswald Oberhuber, with his ... More

Ilit Azoulay and Liat Elbling winners of the 2011 Constantiner Photography Award
TEL AVIV.- The 2011 Constantiner Photography Award for an Israeli Artist has been awarded to Ilit Azoulay (b. 1972) and Liat Elbling (b. 1980). The artists represents a significant trend prevalent recently in Israeli photography, centering on a renewed discussion of seeing, remembering and documenting, through the use of processing, simulating and assembling—originating in direct photography but removed from it, thus creating paradoxical environments. Ilit Azoulay creates in her works a staged environment with an inquiring typological—yet fictitious and enigmatic—appearance. Like an archaeological study that sorts and catalogues findings from the past, she collects remnants of the present and applies onto them a clear regularity of gaze and photographic conditions, and assembles a continuous pictorial sequence devoid of thematic meaning. The space achieved in the final photograph subverts the spatial ... More

New video work by Oliver Michaels at the Cole Gallery in London
LONDON.- 'A Journey Between Two Fixed Points' is a new video work by Oliver Michaels at the Cole gallery, London from 16 November to 17 December 2011. Michaels’ practice explores the structure and technology of film and photography, often through the prism of the tools of popular culture. In an era in which every supposed significant event of our lives is thoroughly documented, 'A Journey Between Two Fixed Points' focuses on moments that are mostly neglected or designated as backgrounds. A camera set up on an automated tripod and placed in the window at a number of locations endlessly records from left to right, seamlessly entering and dipping out of public and private settings. The film plays witness to the fragments of a range of characters’ lives. The ‘cast’ are accustomed and thus seem oblivious to the camera, lending an honesty to the documentation. This sampling of conversations and activities beg ... More

Shimabuku: "Man should try to avoid contact with alien life forms"
VASSIVIERE.- The Centre international d'art et du paysage on Vassivière Island welcomes the solo exhibition, Man should try to avoid contact with alien life forms from Japanese artist Shimabuku. “Shima”, meaning “island” in Japanese, leads quite naturally the artist to work on Vassivière Island, to conclude Chiara Parisi's program at the Art center in the most poetic way. After conducting exhibitions and projects in this unique island landscape for seven years, Chiara Parisi asked Shimabuku to create works that would resist any exhibition constraint and propose a whole new way of relating to nature and animals. When he was younger, Shimabuku wanted to become a poet or a tour guide. Convinced that art doesn't have to necessarily create objects but should rather generate encounters, the artist managed to combine his two vocations. From that point on, style or medium is not what really matters in ... More
